at the end of the day, media that requires primitive playback devices
, will probably have the best chance for longevity. i’d like to think that the categories are socratic: biological, elemental, and mechanical. any singular or combination of these can re-play analog media. for example photographs and cinema film (light and eyes), audio records (mechanical and ears), and storytelling/singing (eyes and voice).
nice article about the digital data management… my take aways were that we will have increasing challenges with backup and archive of data, not only with file formats, but also with the transport medium, DRM, and just the shit ton of data that we are starting to generate.
